Being a good steward of my resources (5): Possessions

1. Possessions are not wrong, but our attitude towards them can be.

Luke 12:15
15 And He said to them, Guard yourselves and keep free from all covetousness (the immoderate desire for wealth, the greedy longing to have more); for a man’s life does not consist in and is not derived from possessing overflowing abundance or that which is over and above his needs.

2. Where is your Treasure?
Matthew 6:19-21 19 Do not gather and heap up and store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust and worm consume and destroy, and where thieves break through and steal. 20 But gather and heap up and store for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust nor worm consume and destroy, and where thieves do not break through and steal; 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

3. What is a good balance of having and not having?

The analysis of a threat is important because it is so easy to overlook important threats. One way of trying to capture them all is to use a number of different approaches: 1. Firstly, run through a list such as the one above, to see if any apply. 2. Secondly, think through the systems, organizations or structures you operate, and analyze risks to any part of those. 3. See if you can see any vulnerabilities within these systems or structures. 4. Ask your coach, your mentor or other person that is wise, who might have a Kingdom perspective.

Hear it from a Kingdom perspective (in the words of Jesus): Luke 14:27, 30, 32 MSG

One day when large groups of people were walking along with him, Jesus turned and told them, "Anyone who comes to me but refuses to let go of father, mother, spouse, children, brothers, sisters—yes, even one's own self!—can't be my disciple. Anyone who won't shoulder his own cross and follow behind me can't be my disciple. "Is there anyone here who, planning to build a new house, doesn't first sit down and figure the cost so you'll know if you can complete it? If you only get the foundation laid and then run out of money, you're going to look pretty foolish. Everyone passing by will poke fun at you: 'He started something he couldn't finish.' "Or can you imagine a king going into battle against another king without first deciding whether it is possible with his ten thousand troops to face the twenty thousand troops of the other? And if he decides he can't, won't he send an emissary and work out a truce?
